Most Wanted | Short Story Excerpt
I sighed. Of course, it would be the single most wanted terrorist on the CIA’s top ten list. Never a dull day in the CIA. Hasan was wanted for numerous shootings and bombings throughout the US at sports and public events until he fled through Mexico.
He was an accomplished sniper trained by Russians and someone who kept only a small team close, making it even more difficult to track him. From Mexico, he traveled in a proverbial “Where’s Hasan?” chase around the globe. Every time the CIA would get close, he’d disappear again, like a ghost. It still stung having lost him in France last year. This was personal.
I sat forward. “What’s the mission?”
“You’re to find him and, if possible, bring him back to the US to face a laundry list of terrorism charges. I’m sending two more with you, Tony and Mozart.”
I grinned. Both were competent and strong without drawing attention. “So, this is a locate and seize?”
“Exactly. We’ll have a mercenary team ready to deploy if needed as a backup.”
“Do we have any intel as to where he might be?”
He slid a file across the desk and flipped it open. “We think he might be protected by this prince, Mohammed Bin Rashed, who’s fifth in line to the Crown Prince. Also, Hasan’s daughter Gabriella’s birthday is coming up. We have an informant who says he visits the Mall of the Emirates every year for a lavish shopping trip and for some indoor skiing. We’ll have a team monitoring the mall from open until close, so when he shows up, we’ll let you know. Her birthday is in two days.”
“When do I leave?”
“Tomorrow afternoon, courtesy of the Air Force. Pack light, it’ll be hot,” he said, giving me a rare smile.
I groaned at his reminder and rose.
“Oh, and Jazz?”
“Yeah?”
“Watch your six out there.”
